Anthropology, Sociology, and Egyptology Student Association
Mandate and Purpose
The association aims to positively impact students regardless of their affiliation to any particular department or organization. This is to be achieved through fostering a sense of community via encouraging discussion across a wide range of topics and hosting events that promote an environment of celebration and community-building.
The association aims to:
Advance the three disciplines of Sociology, Egyptology, and Anthropology by fostering a network of AUC students, alumni, and professionals across the globe.
Create spaces that allow students and faculty to exchange, advance, and disseminate research and opinions via discussion.
Organize activities such as exhibitions, conferences, and field trips for members of the association.
Raise awareness of Sociology, Egyptology, and Anthropology within AUC and create relationships with similar groups both within and beyond the university.
Organize events to raise awareness of the AUC student body regarding professional career options available within the disciplines by holding events such as workshops organized by faculty members at AUC, professionals in relevant fields both in and outside of Egypt and NGOs in relevant fields.
Annual Events
SOAN Conversation Series
Organized by the Graduate Program in Sociology-Anthropology, the conversation series aims to foster a critical intellectual collective by sharing works in progress and other research ideas among faculty and students in the SEA department. The series also regularly hosts scholars who are visiting the region and welcomes contributions from colleagues in the social sciences and humanities at AUC. The series is organized at least once a month and is open to the AUC community.
SEA Annual Student Conference
Held annually in November-December of each academic year, the SEA student conference aims to showcase and celebrate the research of undergraduate and graduate students in the department. The conference also offers students who participated in the Soraya Altorki Award to share their research with a wider intellectual community. This annual conference hopes to establish a tradition of dialogue and debate among students and faculty in the department and the school of HUSS at large.
