Professional Educators Diploma in Educational Leadership (EDL)

This course presents fundamental concepts, principles, and practices related to educational leadership at the school level. Topics covered include how to collaboratively create and implement plans to achieve the vision and mission of the school, nurture and sustain a culture of trust and high expectations at the school, understand the importance of transparency and the principles of ethical behavior among all members of the school community and consider the moral and legal consequences of decisions.

Efficient and effective school leadership and management are the cornerstones of the school as a successful learning community. In this course, students will learn how to manage such a community by recognizing their own leadership styles by learning how to obtain, allocate, align and efficiently utilize resources and technology, and by enhancing the critical interpersonal skills necessary for the effective leader and manager. They will recognize the essential need to focus on teachers and all components of the organization on creating and maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. Attention will be directed toward the development of the capacity for shared leadership.

Central to contemporary educational leadership is monitoring, evaluating, and assessing outcomes at multiple levels of practice. This course provides current and prospective school leaders with knowledge essential for understanding the academic leadership function in education and teaching and learning organizations. The content covers the main areas of instruction, assessment strategies, teacher performance, and the disposition of the instructional leader. Emphasis is on the necessity of a quality instructional leader for the school and the achievement of its students. 

The topic of this course is the essential role that technology plays in the working life of a school leader. Participants will learn about how to deal with this important, but rapidly changing, area of knowledge and skills through learning how to promote the use of the most effective and appropriate technologies to support teaching and learning, apply technology to enhance professional practice, and integrate technology to build and store student management systems information.

Students will participate in an internship for school leaders, which will include developing and implementing an internship plan to include possible activities. The possible activities for school-based administrative interns can be one of the following: chairing standing committees or special task forces, coordinating school-level initiatives, submitting planning proposal at the school level, monitoring, analyzing, and reporting students’ learning outcomes, participating in school-parent-community groups and related outreach efforts, supervising teachers and others, addressing school effectiveness and equity of access and outcomes and participating in school leadership teams.
