M 02:00 pm - 04:40 pm

The course aims to examine some of the principal social, political and legal institutions in medieval Islam especially those that come under Islamic jurisprudence. They are placed in historical contexts in order to see how they were put into practice at different times. It also aims at showing the diverse points of view towards the theory and the application of these institutions. To this aim, the readings reflect some of the differences of approach. This seminar will cover a number of Islamic institutions: state institutions, like the caliphate and sultanate; institutions of justice: the administration of courts; the hisba; waqf institution; personal status.
