Message from the Chair
As I launch into my second year of chairing the Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations (ARIC), I find myself awed by the energy, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to excellence of our faculty, alumni, current students, and staff. What a privilege it is to collaborate with all of them on a daily basis!
With its distinguished tradition of research and teaching excellence, ARIC has long been a vibrant focal point for the study of Middle Eastern History, Islamic Studies, Modern and Classical Arabic Literature, and Islamic Art and Architecture. The relevance of these areas of study has never been clearer than at this challenging moment across the global stage. With Cairo, Egypt, and the broader region as our context, we benefit from a wealth of documentary sources, material heritage, and cultural resources, and I can think of no better place to undertake such important work.
One of the most impressive things about ARIC is the success and impact of the department’s alumni in the world beyond AUC. Graduates of our BA, MA, and Diploma Programs go places! Wherever critical thinking, sharp analytical skills, strong writing, cultural acuity, and a thirst for knowledge are sought, ARIC alumni are to be found. Their career paths have led in many directions, including doctoral programs, academic posts, diplomatic careers, and positions with cultural institutions and NGOs.
I invite you to explore our pages here, browse our course offerings in the catalog, drop us a line with questions about the program, and join us for the next stage of your journey!
