Message From The Chair
Since its establishment in 1962, it has been an important contributor to liberal arts and knowledge production in the region and worldwide.
The department is amongst the largest programs at the American University in Cairo (AUC). It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in different specializations like International Relations, Comparative Politics, Political Economy, Public and International Law, a dual degree in Political Science and International Human Rights Law, Development Studies in addition to the Comparative & Middle East Politics and Society graduate program (CMPES); a joint MA degree with the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen.
Our department is home to the Model United Nations, Model Arab League and the Khamasin Journal. These student-led activities offer students the opportunity for experiential learning and critical thinking, which prepare them for their future as leaders in different fields ranging from non-profit organizations, intergovernmental organizations, to the public and private sectors.
We are fortunate to have a group of distinguished international, regional and Egyptian scholars who have a different range of specializations in the field. They are committed to excellence in teaching both undergraduate and graduate students, coming from some of the world’s finest programs in political science, they bring their expertise to the classroom.
As scholars and educators of political science we are aware of the complexities of studying political science, with its big questions about underlying power relations within and between states. We also acknowledge that there are no simple or clear answers to normative questions like justice, freedom or equality. With that in mind, we encourage our students to engage with these debates and discussions to develop a better understanding of the different challenges that we must face and deal with today.
The Department of Political Science is student-centered, and we measure our success by the success of our students. Our courses focus on academic rigor and practical relevance. During your study period with us, we hope you will achieve a better understanding of the many facets of politics within and between states. We will also give you important life-skills of critical thinking and communication, to serve you in your future careers and to contribute positively to society at large. We look forward to welcoming you.
