About Applied Linguistics Department
The Department of Applied Linguistics at AUC has as its primary focus the application of linguistic knowledge to language pedagogy, particularly the teaching of Arabic as a foreign language and the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. The department also focuses on issues pertaining to language and society, language and identity, language and politics and language and discourse. Courses in our department aim to prepare students for community-based careers and research.
It is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that addresses a broad range of language-related issues in order to improve the lives of individuals and conditions in society. It draws on a wide range of theoretical, methodological and educational approaches from various disciplines -- from the humanities to the social, cognitive, medical and natural sciences -- as it develops its own knowledge base about language, its users and uses and their underlying social and material conditions.
