Message from the Director
IGWS aims to be the hub for the academic study of and research in gender studies at AUC. While based in the humanities and social sciences, the Institute aspires to bring together faculty and students from across the university through our graduate and undergraduate programs, courses, and workshops as well as supporting research. We also plan to reach out to the community through field trips as part of our courses, public lectures, and workshops.
The graduate program in gender and women’s studies is an interdisciplinary critical social theory and research-based program. It provides students with a solid grounding in how relations of gender are embedded in social, economic and political formations with a particular focus on the Middle East North Africa MENA and the comparative global south. The program has prepared many of its graduates for doctoral programs in the social sciences at universities in North America, Europe and other parts of the Global South in addition to a variety of professional career paths in social research.
The undergraduate gender studies minor gives students the opportunity to be introduced to the field through multiple disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, literature, history, and film while also training them on how to do research with a gender lens. The Institute is ready to provide support to undergraduate programs and clubs that are engaged in gender issues such as the Tomorrow’s Leaders Gender Scholarship program and the student organization, Heya: The Feminist Initiative.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in becoming more involved in IGWS. We are excited to welcome you at our various activities!
