History Day at EURECA

February 27, 2024

The History Department held a full-day student conference entitled History Day as part of the week-long Annual Conference for Excellence in Undergraduate Research, Entrepreneurship and Creative Achievement (EURECA).

The EURECA History Day Program, held on February 27, 2024, offered a rich tapestry of discussions that spanned critical historical themes and contemporary implications. Throughout the day student panels delved into Jewish and Zionist history from 1917 to 1948, highlighting the complexities of U.S. Jewish reactions to Nazism, the tragic Deir Yassin massacre and the evolving views on Jerusalem post-1948.  The focus of the event then shifted to the intricate dynamics between Israel and Arab nations post-1948, examining topics like German reparations and the Six-Day War's geopolitical ramifications. The exploration of colonialism and the slave trade in Africa and the Americas provided deep reflection. The remaining panels offered a thought-provoking discussion on Orientalism and Pan-Africanism, featuring contrasting viewpoints on colonial legacies. The challenges of interethnic conflict were dissected in the last two panels, with discussions on economic inequality and philosophical approaches to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The program concluded with a vital examination of Egypt's educational landscape, addressing historical foundations and contemporary challenges in school curricula regarding gender roles.

Overall, the event fostered an engaging dialogue among scholars, students and attendees, emphasizing the importance of historical inquiry in understanding present-day issues.
