AUC Graphic Design Aluma Publishes Award-Winning Graphic Novel
Graphic design alumni, Deena Mohamed (2016), was interviewed by the US news outlet National Public Radio (NPR)about her graphic fantasy novel, Shubeik Lubeik, which has won multiple awards and has been translated into several languages. Mohamed was part of the first graduating class of the Graphic Design program at The American University in Cairo (AUC), graduating with honors. During her years as a student, she was often independently working on her own comic projects, most notably the webcomic Qahera, which was awarded Best Digital Comic at the Cairocomix festival in 2015. Under Bahia Shehab’s supervision, she completed her graduation thesis on the history of Egyptian comics, a thorough and carefully considered research project that used design thinking and analysis of the literature in question. Her graduation project was the seed for her graphic novel Shubeik Lubeik. Her observations of the history and visual culture of Egypt were clearly implemented in this successful graphic novel. She has regularly been invited to lecture current students as an outstanding graduate of the program. We are very proud of Mohamed's collaboration with Penguin Press and the release of the English edition of Shubeik Lubeik in the US, which is also coming out in the UK under the title Your Wish is My Command. We cannot wait to see what else she will be creating next as we foresee more brilliance in her future. As her mentors, we wish her the best!
