paper coverIn this paper, Javed Maswood argues that economic globalization originated not in trade liberalization, as is commonly assumed, but as a result of American protectionist policies of the 1980s that encouraged Japanese manufacturers to invest in the US and transplant their network production processes on American soil. This was readily adopted by manufacturers in the US and elsewhere to form the basis of the global production networks that is so integral to globalization today.
