AUC’s Egyptology program provides students with a unique opportunity to gain insight and experience from leading international experts on a wide range of topics, from language and religion to art, architecture and the social structure of the ancient Egyptians. Being ideally situated in Egypt, AUC Egyptology students have the chance to visit historic sites, excavations, and museums that they learn about in their classes, as well as gain hands-on experience, as well as meet scholars specializing in their areas of interest. The program is accredited both in the United States and in Egypt.

There are 3 different possible tracks for the MA:
Art, Archaeology and History; Language, Literature and Religion; and Coptology. The program consists of 24 credits (8 classes, 4 required, 4 optional), a thesis, and some form of fieldwork. Students without a background in Egyptology will be provisionally admitted to the MA program, on condition that they complete courses in Egyptian art, history, and language with a B grade or higher. Students who have taken prior Egyptology classes can place out of these courses by passing exams if they are accepted at AUC with that option. If students have no knowledge of either French or German, they must obtain it during the course of the MA. Students normally start the graduate course sequence in the fall.

The Egyptology/Coptology MA program looks for students with proven academic ability, clear personal interest and a positive outlook about moving to a new country.
Students who lack a strong background in Egyptology will be provisionally admitted to the MA program, on condition that they complete preparatory courses in Egyptian art, history, and language with B or higher grades in those courses. Students with training in Egyptology can place out of these courses by passing exams, which must be stated in the student’s acceptance.
