When my sister and I chose to study literature as undergraduates, we were often faced with the daunting questions: why? What are you going to do with the degree? What’s your career path? Most cruel of all was the response you got upon innocently uttering the words English and Comparative Literature: What is that? What literature taught us, we couldn’t have learnt through anything else. The study of literatures furnishes you with an analytical mind and a critical view to all you read and hear. You look at something and always think how it could be made/said/written better. When surrounded by the pure genius of the human mind that produced texts you read every day, it is difficult not to aspire to perfection. Does anyone doubt learning to read and write? Learning to think and appreciate? Well studying Literature is those skills in their perfect form.
