This course discusses major issues related to the history of Islamic law, classical legal theory and contemporary challenges and debates in this field. The course deals also with selected legal topics as presented in Islamic jurisprudence including the criminal system, ownership and contracts. It is consisted, therefore, of three major parts related to history, principles of jurisprudence and contemporary legal problems and challenges facing Muslim societies. The discussion will not be limited to classical scholarship but is based also on modern studies and scholarship.
