This course is concerned with the theme of governance. How have religion and politics interacted in Islam, past and present, as means for governing and regulating societies? This course shall provide an introductory survey of religion and politics in Islam. We shall read and examine the central debates, themes, and texts that inform our understanding of this dynamic. These shall include Islamic law, the history of the state, and the nature of the judiciary, Muslim reform movements, and Muslim political theory. Students will come to learn that these themes provide a clearer perspective on the relationship between religion and politics from the inception of Islam to the modern day
