Center for the Art Students Design for the Metaverse

October 31, 2022

The global landscape is shifting as the digital world explores the metaverse, often described as the next revolution of the internet.

The AUC Center for the Arts and the Virtual Experience Lab at the School of Sciences and Engineering have been encouraging students to research and develop concrete and creative ideas regarding this evolving field. The process begins with students studying the spatial network of the metaverse and their ability to design their own visions. While it was once said that the sky is the limit, the metaverse and augmented realities have expanded those boundaries.

Designers are currently creating new conceptual and transformational retail experiences by designing on-ground retail spaces. They are now able to achieve what was previously considered impossible by designing for the metaverse, where a universal world is being created through the use of virtual reality.

Students enter the metaverse by creating the futuristic, multisensory aspects that a designed world requires. This process ranges from initial sketches to 360-degree spatial virtual reality experiences that focus on imagination, creativity and design thinking. For example, a jewelry brand can be built and designed on the moon—a concept already explored and implemented by AUC designers in the Graphic Design program.
